![]() A marketplace event to showcase the variety of apprenticeships available in Orkney was held at Kirkwall Grammar School during Scottish Apprenticeship Week. Scottish Apprenticeship Week is an annual campaign which celebrates apprenticeships and promotes the benefits of work-based learning. This year’s campaign focused on ‘Skills Generation’ and aimed to show the high quality opportunities an apprenticeship can offer. ![]() In order to promote some of the apprenticeship opportunities available, an Apprenticeship Marketplace was held in the school’s Dance Studio over lunchtime and the last two periods of the day. The lunchtime session was open to all pupils and they were invited to drop in during the break. During periods 6, all S3 pupils were taken to the event and in period 7, those in S4-S6 who had study periods or were interested in an apprenticeship were encouraged to drop in and speak to employers. During the event, 15 employers attended and provide information about their business, the apprenticeship opportunities they offer and spoke to pupils about qualifications and skills, as well as work experience opportunities that are available. The businesses who attended showcased the range of apprenticeship opportunities in Orkney and those who attended included those from construction, agricultural engineering, aquaculture, early years and childcare, NHS Orkney and Orkney Islands Council. Also in attendance were E Flett Quality Butcher from Stromness who brought along their apprentice butcher, Alistair Park. Alistair was recently awarded the Scottish Craft Butchers SVQ Level 2 Modern Apprentice of the Year Award 2023. He was on hand to speak to pupils about his experience as an apprentice and answer any questions they may have about the reality of undertaking an apprenticeship. Careers Advisors from SDS also attended to speak to pupils and support them in taking their next steps, while staff from UHI Orkney were also on hand to speak about the range of apprenticeship delivered locally, as well as entry requirements and how training is structures. The aim of the event was to highlight the range of apprenticeship opportunities that exist locally and to encourage pupils who are considering an apprenticeship to meet with employers to discuss their options. In total, 210 pupils attended the event with some of them taking the opportunity to discuss their options with employers. A huge thank you to all the businesses who attended this event.
