An apprenticeship event was held at Kirkwall Grammar School earlier this month as part of Scottish Careers Week. A Scotland-wide campaign which highlights the breadth of industries, career paths and opportunities across Scotland, Scottish Careers Week is a chance to show how careers support is available when it’s needed, supporting individuals and helping employers to build the skilled, resilient workforce they need. As part of the week-long campaign, Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Orkney held an apprenticeship marketplace at one of our secondary schools, to showcase the breadth of opportunities available with local businesses.
Arranged by the DYW School Co-ordinator at Kirkwall Grammar School, the event was aimed at senior phase pupils (S4-S6) and timed ahead of prelims and the subject choice period, when many pupils are considering their next steps. Seven businesses came along to speak to pupils about the apprenticeship opportunities they offer, while CITB and UHI Orkney attended as training and learning providers to provide advice on accessing apprenticeship opportunities locally. Careers Advisers from Skills Development Scotland were also on hand to offer careers advice and guidance, while DYW Orkney staff provided information on the range of apprenticeships available. In Orkney, senior school pupils can access a Foundation Apprenticeships as one of their school subjects in S5 and S6. Delivered by UHI Orkney, young people spend part of their school timetable in college and on placement in industry, learning the theory and gaining practical experience. Three frameworks are available in Business, Social Service and Healthcare and, Social Services Children and Young People. Foundation Apprenticeships can lead onto employment, further or higher education or onto a Modern or Graduate Apprenticeship. Modern and Graduate Apprenticeships enable individuals to ‘earn while they learn’ combining full-time employment with industry recognised training and qualifications. For more information on apprenticeships visit apprenticeships.scot. Thank you to everyone who came along to support the event, and to the pupils who engaged well with exhibitors. Comments are closed.
