During an interview, if you can, try to relate your skills and experience to the role. This could be something as simple as spending time using a home computer. Employers often look for computer literacy in potential candidates (even in industries you might not expect!), and they'll usually list this in the person specification. For our second No Wrong Path Sector Spotlight this week, we're focussing on IT. Today we hear from Joel Lewsley, Compliance Technician at rm Managed IT Services, who provide IT support services to businesses across Orkney and the North of Scotland. Jobs of the Week are live! We hope everyone is enjoying show week so far. This week's features include an opening at the Dounby Surgery for a Dispensary Assistant, a vacancy at Kirkwall Airport for an Administration Officer, and an exciting opportunity to join Orkney Dental as a Trainee Dental Nurse - but be quick, because it closes tomorrow! If you're looking for a job with a certain company, but they're not actively recruiting, try sending a speculative application. Even if they don't have any paid vacancies this demonstrates that you are proactive and motivated. They may be able to offer you an internship or placement, and when a vacancy does come up within the company, they might even ask you first. For more information, have a look at this page on our website. This week is No Wrong Path week, when we are helping young people see the options that are available to them and that there is no wrong path to success. As part of that we are continuing our Sector Spotlight campaign, which shines a spotlight on some of the different jobs available in Orkney, and the route people took into their current roles. This week we will hear from people in different sectors, and in our first post this week, we hear from Karyn Tait, Oral Health Team Lead at NHS Orkney Dental. NHS Orkney Dental provide dental care free to young people up to the age of 26, as well as undertaking work in schools and care homes to help promote good dental health. Young people across Orkney will tomorrow (Tuesday 5 August) receive their SQA results. If your results are not what you expected, don’t panic you still have options – and there will be experts on hand to help you navigate the next part of your journey. From 8am on Tuesday 5 August, a dedicated Results Helpline from Skills Development Scotland (SDS) will run with Careers Advisers waiting to answer calls and offer advice, information and support to young people and their parents or carers. In our last Sector Spotlight on Land-based Industries, we hear from Graham Low, Senior Auctioneer at the Orkney Auction Mart. The Mart is Orkney's only livestock market, selling sheep and cattle, as well as hosting a public cafe operated by a local butcher. It's show season! The Mart plays a big role in ensuring the shows run smoothly. Look out for the shows happening over the next week, and keep an eye on our pages on Monday morning to find out about our next feature! |
