Throughout September, Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Orkney have been taking the show on the road, hosting careers events at the three Junior High Schools. The Isles Career Roadshow was developed by the DYW School Co-ordinator for the three Junior High Schools, giving pupils who live on Sanday, Stronsay and Westray the chance to meet local employers and learn more about the careers available across Orkney. The event was targeted to pupils in upper primary (Primary 5-7) and secondary school (Secondary 1-4). Pupils were able to speak to employers and ask questions, learning more about what their business does, the variety of jobs available and some of the routes into careers including apprenticeships, further training and education. There was also a chance to try out some fun activities and some of the equipment used in different jobs.
The islands’ Development Trusts also attended their local event, helping young people know more about the role they play on the island and showcasing some of the local job opportunities with the development trust. In addition, at Westray Junior High School, the Parent Council also attended to explain how they add to school life. DYW Orkney and Careers Advisers from Skills Development Orkney were also on hand with information about apprenticeships, courses available at UHI Orkney and support for anyone who may need help to take the next step on their career journey. Charlotte Hoque, the DYW School Co-ordinator for the isles, said: “The Isles Career Roadshows were a great way to get local employers out to the isles, letting young people explore the opportunities that exist in Orkney and helping them to think about their future career options. We were delighted so many employers came out to the isles to support these events.” Across the three events, 14 different businesses and organisations attended, including NHS Orkney, Police Scotland, the Pickaquoy Centre and BAM Nuttall. Kristen Muir, Headteacher at Sanday Community School, said: “As well as giving Sanday’s young people the opportunity to explore the different careers available to them, the Career Roadshow was a great chance for them to engage with people they didn’t know, helping them develop their confidence and communication skills. We were delighted to work with DYW Orkney in offering this event to our pupils, and look forward to this becoming a regular event in the school calendar.” Comments are closed.
