![]() Last week was Scottish Apprenticeship Week, which is a nationwide celebration of apprenticeships, and the DYW Orkney team were busy promoting the benefits work-based learning brings to businesses and individuals. On Monday, our Administrative Assistant Caitlin – who has recently completed her Modern Apprenticeship in Business and Administration - met with Liam McArthur MSP and other local apprentices from Orkney Islands Council, Sheila Fleet Jewellery and UHI Orkney to discuss their apprenticeship journeys and the benefits they have gained from undertaking an apprenticeship. All four apprentices have been supported by staff from the Business SVQ team at UHI Orkney. Then, staff from UHI Orkney, CITB and R Clouston Ltd., visited Stromness Academy as part of their Lunch with an Employer sessions, to promote the apprenticeship opportunities available at UHI Orkney. Pupils were able to learn more about opportunities in construction, agriculture, social care, healthcare, early years and childcare and, business administration. On Tuesday morning, Project Manager Rachel and Francis Sinclair, Apprenticeship Development Officer with CITB, were on BBC Radio Orkney to speak about apprenticeships and the benefits they can offer businesses and individuals. This interview included an interview with Scott from Casey Construction and one of their apprentices, Declan. Later that day, Francis then met with pupils at Kirkwall Grammar School who are interested in a career in the construction industry. He spoke to them about how an apprenticeship can help them to develop skills and experience. For the second Lunch with an Employer of the week, NHS Orkney visited Stromness Academy to promote the various apprenticeship opportunities they have available in their clinical and non-clinical teams. These opportunities include Modern and Graduate Apprenticeships. Finally, on Wednesday Argo’s Bakery visited Stromness Academy for Lunch with an Employer to discuss the apprenticeship opportunities with their business. There are opportunities to work with Argo’s as an Apprentice Baker, Apprentice Confectioner, Retail Assistant or Dispatch Worker, all of which offer the opportunity to work towards SVQs with training from the Scottish Bakers Association. Thank you so much to all of the employers and organisations who supported our Scottish Apprenticeship Week activity.
