We're entering our second week of Sector Spotlight, where we're focussing on Maritime Careers! Today we hear from Erik Dearness, who is an Apprentice Deckhand at Orkney Ferries. OF operate the lifeline inter-island ferry service between the Orkney Mainland and the North and South Isles. Orkney Ferries are currently running a recruitment campaign for their next cohort of Apprentices. If you're interested in a career at sea, make sure to apply on the Orkney Ferries website before the 27th July! Can you describe a typical day in your role as Apprentice Deckhand?
I head to work one hour before sailing time for muster. I put on PPE and get ready to untie the boat and move to the linkspan to load. After we have loaded we do some maintenance during sailing time, and if I have time I try to do a bit of studying. Once or twice a day I take a watch in the Bridge. We sail 2-3 times a day. Once a week we do an emergency drill when we are tied up, to keep it fresh in our minds in case of a real life situation. After a day of sailing, we tie up, unload and finish up. How did you end up in this role? After leaving school (S4), I worked on various boats and in seafood processing. I knew I want to focus on a career at sea, so when the Orkney Ferries Apprenticeship was advertised, I knew it was a fantastic opportunity and applied straight away. What is the best thing about your job? It’s hard to choose just one thing but I would say getting to expand my knowledge at sea and learn from my experienced colleagues. What is the worst thing about your job? The working day can feel long, but it’s balanced out by working one week on and off. What skills do you need to undertake your role? Good communication and observation, teamwork, Health & Safety awareness. What qualifications do you have? Nat 5 in Geography, English, Metalwork and Applications of Maths Navigational Watch Rating certificate Steering certificate Personal Survival Techniques (STCW) Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (STCW) Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting certificate (STCW) Elementary First Aid (STCW) Efficient Deckhand certificate (STCW) Would you recommend this job to young people? If so, why? Yes, it’s a great opportunity to learn new skills from a friendly, experienced crew.
