For our second No Wrong Path Sector Spotlight this week, we're focussing on IT. Today we hear from Joel Lewsley, Compliance Technician at rm Managed IT Services, who provide IT support services to businesses across Orkney and the North of Scotland. Can you describe a typical day in your role as Compliance Technician?
The majority of my day consists of managing our compliance queue. This boils down to making sure that all the behind-the-scenes stuff for our clients is running as it should be, for example I’ll conduct backup reviews and test restores to make sure that everything is all running correctly, and to make sure the backups are accessible if they were ever to be needed. I also assist our clients in going through their Cyber Essentials accreditation, which is a certification scheme that is aimed at keeping organisations and their data safe from Cyber Attacks. When needed I also lend a hand to the team in the Helpdesk. How did you end up in this role? I was studying Computer Science up at the UHI when the job at rm first became available, I worked at rm part time 2 days a week whilst studying 3 days. Once my course finished, I transitioned into a full-time position at rm and have been working here ever since! What is the best thing about your job? I know it sounds a bit cheesy to say, but 100% the people. Whether it be the clients or my colleagues in the office, everyone is always a pleasure to work with. What is the worst thing about your job? There isn’t really anything negative I can think of to be honest! What skills do you need to undertake your role? The main ones I’d say are technical skills, problem solving, communication and team working. Technical skills and problem solving are massive helps with the day to day issues that you will encounter, but team working and communication are just as important, as a lot of the time for larger scale work you’ll be working with multiple other people. What qualifications do you have? Through working at rm I have gained a Certified Cybersecurity Technician qualification. I also have BSc in Computer Science, and a Higher in History, English, Computing and Music Technology. Would you recommend this job to young people? If so, why? Definitely, it's an incredibly rewarding job, and due to the ever evolving nature of the industry no day is ever really the same!
