During June we have been working with our partners at Skills Development Scotland to speak to the new senior pupils at Stromness Academy and Kirkwall Grammar School as part of their school inductions. At Stromness Academy, we spoke to the new S4, S5 and S6 pupils to help them prepare for what they may like to do next. Findlay from Skills Development Scotland (SDS) spoke about the careers service available in the school and what they could expect from a careers appointment. They were encouraged to access the careers advice and guidance service in school to help them identify the right pathway for them.
Then, Rachel from DYW Orkney spoke to them about the routes and pathways available and explained how the school’s DYW School Co-ordinator could support them to gain insight into their future career or help them develop the skills and experience they might need to help them take their next step. At Kirkwall Grammar School, DYW Orkney and SDS staff spoke to the new S6 year group about routes and pathways, the careers service and work experience. They were encouraged them to make the most of the opportunities available to them during their final year at school to help them develop the skills and experience that would help them progress onto further education, training or employment. Finally, Leah, the DYW School Co-ordinator at Kirkwall Grammar School, spoke to S4 and S5 pupils who have study periods on a Monday afternoon about work experience and explained how she could support them to identify and set up a suitable work placement to suit their interests. These sessions were a great way for both DYW Orkney and SDS to introduce themselves to pupils. Thanks to both schools for inviting us along to speak to senior pupils. Comments are closed.
