An event to help school pupils learn more about the courses they can study at UHI Orkney as part of their school timetable was held at the start of the year. More than 200 third year pupils from Stromness Academy and Kirkwall Grammar School attended the UHI Orkney Taster session, which was held at the college at the start of January. The event is timed to support the subject choice period, when pupils decide which subjects to study in the next academic year. As part of the School College Partnership, senior pupils at local secondary and junior high schools are able to study college courses as part of their school timetable. The qualifications available include National 5 and Higher subjects as well as Skills for Work courses and work-based learning through Foundation Apprenticeships.
The School College Partnership offers a wider choice of vocational and academic learning opportunities, which complement the school curriculum. Courses also give pupils an insight into college life, further and higher education choices and future career pathways. You can learn more about the Senior Phase course options available at UHI Orkney here. At the event, pupils were able to speak to staff from different departments about the subjects available, ask questions and learn more about where qualifications could take them after school. Staff put on some activities and competitions to engage pupils and facilitate discussions about courses. There was also a chance for them to learn about the Further and Higher Education opportunities available at UHI Orkney. Pupils were also given a tour of the East Road Campus, learning more about the departments and facilities available to students. The tour was also a chance to help pupils become familiar with a different learning environment, dispelling any anxiety they may have about coming to the college. The event was lots of fun and is a great, informal way for pupils to experience life at the college. All the pupils who attended took the chance to speak to staff, try out activities and learn more about their options at UHI Orkney. A huge thank you to all of the UHI Orkney staff for taking part in the event and the schools for coming along. Comments are closed.
