The Orkney Careers Fair takes place on Thursday 15 September at the Pickaquoy Centre, Kirkwall. As part of the event, we are offering a series of breakout sessions which are open to employers and teachers. These sessions will cover a variety of topics which will help employers to attract and recruit staff, and which teachers can use to implement the Career Education Standards and help young people develop the skills they need for the world of work.
There will be three sessions and you will find details about each session, along with details of how to reserve your space, below.

Accessing the Hidden Workforce (3.30pm-4pm):
As employers, you want to attract the best staff; recruiting and retaining those with the right skills to help your business develop and grow. However, we know that some recruitment practices make it harder for the people with the right skills to apply for, or secure employment.
This session will help you learn how to access the hidden workforce that exists in Orkney, encouraging you to think about changes and adjustments you could make to attract people to work with your business.

Careers in the Classroom (4.30pm-5pm):
The Career Education Standard recognises the journey children and young people make as they learn about the world of work throughout their education, from early years to the senior phase. Implementation of the standard will improve the quality and consistency of learning about work and careers, and it will improve young people’s ability to make informed decisions about future pathways.
In this session, you will hear from a local employer and a school who have worked together to deliver careers education to pupils in an engaging and informative way, not only increasing careers knowledge but also developing numeracy and literacy skills.
There will be a chance for educators to learn how they could introduce the same approach in their classroom, and help employers and educators consider their role in helping young people make the connection between what they learn in the classroom and the world of work.

Developing Meta-Skills (5pm-5.30pm):
Meta-skills are the innate, timeless, higher-order skills that create adaptive learners, able to succeed whatever the future brings. From birth, children use and develop meta-skills as they test and explore the world around them.
In education, it is essential that practitioners nurture and develop meta-skills within learners so they are able to navigate a world that is increasingly complex and unpredictable.
In employment, you want both your potential and current workforce to have well-developed meta-skills so they are able to cope and respond to change, enabling your organisation and workforce to thrive in the future.
This session will help you learn more about meta-skills, what they are and how they can be developed and utilised in education and the world of work.
