Next week, pupils across Scotland will receive their exam results. For many their next step will depend on the results they achieve and it can be disheartening if the outcome is not what they had hoped for. When you’re young, it can seem that those older than you had an easy journey from school to their current job. However, this is not always (if ever) the case. Many people leave school with no clear idea about what they want to do next, and if they do they may not necessarily end up in that job. Recently, we have been working with the local schools to support senior pupils in identifying and securing work placements. This has been a really interesting experience, and has been a great chance for us to learn more about the career ambitions of some of our local young people. Speaking to them, it’s clear that while some of them have a very definite idea about their preferred career destination, others are still exploring the options available to them. Today is the last day of the Easter break and as everyone gets ready to return to school tomorrow, many pupils will be preparing for their exams, which start on Thursday (25 April 2019). Some will have used their holidays to revise and go through some past papers, while others may only now be getting ready for their exams and fitting in some last minute study. Whatever approach is taken, everyone is likely to be suffering some stress and anxiety about the impending exams and not just pupils, but their parents and teachers too. Today (Monday 4 March 2019) marks the start of Scottish Apprenticeship Week which this year is focusing on the theme of ‘Skills for the Future’, in order to recognise the importance of investing in our workforce. Over the coming weeks, pupils in S3-S5 will be making their subject choices for the next academic year. Parents supporting them through this process may be bewildered by the array of options their children now face, which can be very different from when they were making these choices themselves. Looking through the ‘Options for Senior Phase’ booklet produced by Orkney College, you may have spotted that your child can study for a Foundation Apprenticeship. |
