Employers from different areas of the construction industry have been offering pupils an insight into different careers through talks and site visits. The pupils all know they would like to work in the construction industry when they leave school, but are not sure which area they would like to specialise in so these sessions have helped them to identify their future career path. The pupils, who are undertaking the Skills for Work course in Construction Crafts at Orkney College as part of their school timetable, have heard from Clinton Findlay from Kenneth C Findlay & Sons Ltd, Marty Flett from Alfred Flett Ltd. and Stephen Kemp from Orkney Builders. The pupils were also able to visit the site of the new care home being built in Kirkwall by R. Clouston Ltd, which gave them a chance to learn more about working on a construction site. Alongside these sessions, pupils from Kirkwall Grammar School and Stromness Academy who are interested in becoming an electrician have been supported to register with SECTT (Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust) who oversee electrical apprenticeships. This will enable pupils to undertake their pre-employment assessment which is needed before they can begin an apprenticeship. These sessions are a great way for pupils to learn more about the wide variety of careers in the sector, speak to local employers and also learn about apprenticeship opportunities available through CITB, SECTT and other learning providers. Thanks to all of the businesses who have taken part in the insight sessions. ![]() For Jobs of the Week this Thursday 4 May, we have a variety of jobs including an Apprentice Plumber at Steven R Paterson Ltd, a Business Admin Modern Apprenticeship at Orkney Housing Association Ltd, a Trainee Internal Auditor with Orkney Islands Council and many others.
