Work placements are an opportunity for young people to become familiar with working in a professional workplace, while also helping them learn about and understand the variety of jobs that are available in Orkney.

Work placements can help identify the sorts of jobs you may, or may not be interested in and can help make informed choices about your future.  This includes what subjects you should study at school, or identifying the different pathways into a career such as apprenticeships or further and higher education qualifications.

Undertaking a work placement will also help you develop transferable skills which will benefit you in whatever job you may choose in the future.

More information on work placements can be found here.

Pupils Gain Insight to Construction Careers

10/5/2023

PicturePupils were given a tour of the construction site of the new Kirkwall care home by R. Clouston Ltd.
Kirkwall Grammar School pupils who are interested in a career in the construction industry have been given a chance to learn more about the range of opportunities available in the sector.

Employers from different areas of the construction industry have been offering pupils an insight into different careers through talks and site visits.  The pupils all know they would like to work in the construction industry when they leave school, but are not sure which area they would like to specialise in so these sessions have helped them to identify their future career path.

The pupils, who are undertaking the Skills for Work course in Construction Crafts at Orkney College as part of their school timetable, have heard from Clinton Findlay from Kenneth C Findlay & Sons Ltd, Marty Flett from Alfred Flett Ltd. and Stephen Kemp from Orkney Builders.  The pupils were also able to visit the site of the new care home being built in Kirkwall by R. Clouston Ltd, which gave them a chance to learn more about working on a construction site.

Alongside these sessions, pupils from Kirkwall Grammar School and Stromness Academy who are interested in becoming an electrician have been supported to register with SECTT (Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust) who oversee electrical apprenticeships.  This will enable pupils to undertake their pre-employment assessment which is needed before they can begin an apprenticeship.

These sessions are a great way for pupils to learn more about the wide variety of careers in the sector, speak to local employers and also learn about apprenticeship opportunities available through CITB, SECTT and other learning providers.

Thanks to all of the businesses who have taken part in the insight sessions.
