Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2022 starts next Monday (7 March) and we will be supporting it to show the value of Scottish Apprenticeships to people, business and the economy. This year’s theme is Apprenticeships Work, which aims to highlight how apprenticeships are providing the skills employers need now and for the future. Scottish Apprenticeships work by providing thousands of opportunities to get a job, get paid and get qualified across Scotland every year. Third year pupils at Stromness Academy have recently enjoyed a week of activities during the school’s annual Careers Week.
A part of the school calendar since 2019, Careers Week was developed to support pupils in S3, who will shortly be making their subject choices for their fourth year, which can influence where they will end up after school. Are you someone who is compassionate, enjoys working with people and looking for a career that helps other live their lives to the full? If so, you may be interested in a new online course which has been developed to help people learn more about careers in Social Care. 'Introduction to a Career in Social Care' is a free six week, part-time, online course being offered by Orkney College UHI. You will be fully supported by a tutor and will need to commit up to ten hours a week to the course. It is ideal for anyone aged 16 years and over and, as the course is part-time, you can fit it round your life and existing commitments. Career opportunities in social care are many and varied, with a variety of services meeting the needs of children, young people and adults of all ages who need support. Leah, the DYW School Co-ordinator based at the KGS, has been busy speaking to local people about their jobs as part of this regular feature. Pupils will learn more about the different pathways people have taken into their job, the best thing about it and the qualifications a young person might need to do a similar role. Pupils can also learn about some of the other skills and experience they should think about developing to help them in their future career. Currently, pupils can read interviews from a Hairdresser, Teacher and Police Officer. Careers in the Spotlight can be found on the SDS Orkney and DYW Orkney ‘Opportunities and Careers Information’ noticeboard which is located on the first floor of the school.
