Following a successful event last year, NHS Orkney in partnership with Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Orkney, held a ‘Day in the Life’ event at The Balfour on Friday 15 November. These events help young people learn more about the range of health and social care careers that are available with NHS Orkney. The ‘Day in the Life’ event was open to interested pupils from S3-S6 at secondary schools throughout Orkney. A really great opportunity is currently available for someone to join Marine Scotland as a Modern Apprentice Assistant Fishery Officer. This vacancy, which will be based in Kirkwall, offers the successful applicant an opportunity to gain on-the-job training and qualifications, with the opportunity to progress further within the organisation once they have completed their Modern Apprenticeship. As well as providing administrative support to the rest of the team, there will be an opportunity to assist the Senior Fishery Officer/Fishery Officer with inspection duties on the pier and on board fishing vessels. We teamed up with Skills Development Scotland at the weekend to attend a careers fair for local young people who are, or have been, care experienced. The event was organised by the Children and Families Team at Orkney Health and Care (OHAC) and was a chance for young people to meet employers in a relaxed and informal environment and learn more about some of the different jobs that are available with businesses in Orkney. SDS and ourselves provided information about career management skills, CV writing and information on the different learning and training pathways available.
