Andy Tennant is the Chair of the DYW Orkney Regional Group Board and is the Store Manager of Tesco Kirkwall. “I first started in retail whilst at school with Safeway stores and stayed with them throughout my studies. I attended university in Glasgow then became a Department Manager in Safeway. In 2001 I joined Tesco to open the Fraserburgh store and my Lead Manager took a chance on me helping put me on the career path to Store Manager. I have been Store Manager in many stores across the north of Scotland from Banff to Inverness and moved to Orkney in the summer of 2017.”
Why did you get involved with DYW Orkney? “Throughout my time in retail someone spotted that I had some potential at a young age and gave me a chance to develop my technical and leadership skills. I have never forgotten that and wherever I have worked I have always championed developing our young workforce and building a retail store succession plan. “When I moved to the island I had an opportunity to join the board and linked to my desire to see all youngsters be given a fair chance to develop I was excited about this opportunity. With over 200 colleagues in my store, many under the age of 24 and hundreds more colleagues across all our retail outlets we have an outstanding opportunity to help youngsters across the island learn great life skills in customer service, build confidence and learn new business leadership skills in partnership with the other great sectors represented on our board at DYW Orkney. “I have been excited and impressed by the number of youngsters in my industry that want to do their best for customers and are willing to learn and develop their potential. Orkney has many talented young people who just need to be given a chance or pointed in the right direction and it is without doubt one of the most rewarding parts of my role when I see some of these youngsters fulfil that potential.” Comments are closed.
