 To celebrate Scottish Apprenticeships Week, we are highlighting the diversity that makes work-based learning good for individuals, employers and the economy.
Throughout the week, BBC Radio Orkney are featuring interviews with local people who are undertaking apprenticeships along with their employers, who are supporting them through the qualification.  Next week is Scottish Apprenticeships Week, which celebrates the diversity that makes work-based learning good for individuals, employers and the economy.
This year’s campaign theme is ‘Talent Without Limits’ and we want to use the week to challenge the stereotypical view of apprenticeships and highlight the diverse range of apprenticeships that exist in Orkney.  Are you a current, or past apprentice? Want to share your success story, tell others that university is not the only way and share the benefits of choosing an apprenticeship? Then join Scotland’s Apprentice Network.
 A really great opportunity is currently available for someone to join Marine Scotland as a Modern Apprentice Assistant Fishery Officer.
This vacancy, which will be based in Kirkwall, offers the successful applicant an opportunity to gain on-the-job training and qualifications, with the opportunity to progress further within the organisation once they have completed their Modern Apprenticeship. As well as providing administrative support to the rest of the team, there will be an opportunity to assist the Senior Fishery Officer/Fishery Officer with inspection duties on the pier and on board fishing vessels.  The Orkney and Shetland Valuation Joint Board are offering an exciting opportunity for someone to join them as a Graduate Apprentice.
A Graduate Apprenticeship gives the successful applicant a chance to study for an Honours Degree while in paid full-time employment. The vacancy is for a Valuer to join the team in Orkney, and is being offered in partnership with Edinburgh Napier University and Skills Development Scotland. The successful applicant will be supported to complete a BSc (Hons) Construction and Built Environment through block release study at Edinburgh Napier University, starting in August 2019. This is a really exciting opportunity for someone to gain a degree while continuing to live and work in Orkney. An event developed to help local employers learn more about attracting, recruiting and retaining a young workforce was held last week.
Hosted by Remarkable and DYW Orkney, the #BeTheChangemaker event on Friday 17 May 2019, gave employers a chance to hear from organisations who can help them recruit young people into their business, or help them access the opportunities available to develop new or existing employees.  Local employers are invited to book their place at an event that will help them learn more about recruiting apprentices and attracting young people to their workforce.
Hosted by Remarkable, on behalf of Highlands and Islands Enterprise, and in partnership with Developing the Young Workforce Orkney, this will be an opportunity for local employers to hear from some of the organisations who can help them recruit young people into their business and learn more about accessing the opportunities available to develop new or existing employees.  Parents and young people attended an apprenticeships information event at Orkney College. An Orkney and Apprenticeships: Skills for the Future information event was held at Orkney College UHI on Wednesday 6 March 2019 to help young people, parents and carers learn more about the different apprenticeships available in Orkney and understand the opportunities they offer for progression in a career.
 Today (Monday 4 March 2019) marks the start of Scottish Apprenticeship Week which this year is focusing on the theme of ‘Skills for the Future’, in order to recognise the importance of investing in our workforce.
