A successful taster session has been held at Orkney College to help school pupils learn more about some of the subjects they can study at the college as part of their school timetable. In January, over 200 S3 pupils from Kirkwall Grammar School and Stromness Academy attended a Taster Session at Orkney College. The event was timed to support the subject choice period, when these pupils will be choosing which subjects to study in S4. Under the Orkney Offer, Senior Phase (S4-6) pupils are able to choose subjects to study at Orkney College as part of their school timetable. These include National 5 and Higher subjects as well as Skills for Work courses and work-based learning through Foundation Apprenticeships. You can learn more about the Senior Phase course options available at Orkney College here. This event gave pupils a chance to speak to staff from different College departments about the subjects available, aske questions and learn more about where they could take them after school. There was also a chance for them to learn about the Further and Higher Education opportunities available at Orkney College UHI. Sixteen different departments attended the event and provided activates and competitions for the pupils to try out. Some of the activities on offer included a knot-tying demonstration from Nautical Studies, Computing challenging them to ethically hack a computer by identifying the right password, and a typing competition run by the Business Studies Department to find the fastest (and more accurate) typist in each group who visited the event. Meanwhile, the Hospitality Department kept everyone happy with freshly made pancakes and barista coffee available. The event was lots of fun and is a great, informal way for pupils to experience life at the college. All the pupils who attended took the chance to speak to staff, try out activities and learn more about their options at Orkney College UHI. A huge thank you to all of the Orkney College staff for taking part in the event and the schools for coming along. Comments are closed.
