In our first Sector Spotlight on the Food and Drink industry, we hear from Callum MacInnes who is the Director of The Island Smokery. Callum started his career as an engineer working on military aircraft and equipment. He then moved to Orkney and changed direction buying and running shops before starting The Island Smokery. Can you describe a typical day in your role as a Director? My typical day involves me speaking to customers, looking for orders, taking care of any breakdowns, looking after the staff and creating a fun, safe workplace. How did you end up in this role? I was an engineer working on parts for military aircraft and equipment. I had family ties to Orkney and fancied a change. I bought a couple of shops and then started the smokery business (there is a lot more to it). I never plan to far ahead as things can change very quickly. What is the best thing about your job? Seeing the company grow from very humble beginnings to seeing your product in a shop miles away from Orkney. What is the worst thing about your job? Dealing with transport issues. What skills do you need to undertake your role? All of the above plus enthusiasm and a hard work ethic. What qualifications do you have? City and Guilds Engineering. Would you recommend this job to young people, if so why? It gives a young person an opportunity to look at what it takes to make a company run. This is a great tool to have as they develop and look at other opportunities.
