Concluding the first week of our Sector Spotlight on Careers Education, we hear from Charlotte Hoque, who is the DYW School Co-ordinator for Sanday, Stronsay and Westray Junior High Schools. After leaving school, Charlotte gained a scholarship at the Millennium Dance College in London before working as a dance teacher for several years. She then moved into support for learning roles within schools and colleges. Following a move to Orkney with her family, she continued working as a Learning Support Auxiliary at Sanday Junior High School before moving into her current role. Can you describe a typical day in your role as a DYW School Co-ordinator? My typical day includes me liaising with employers to ensure that work placements can be offered to young people from the Junior High Schools. I also engage with schools and employers to make them aware of any upcoming events or opportunities that they may benefit from. I also have to make sure to keep paperwork up to date so that colleagues can see if an employer has already been contacted frequently in regard to work experience or already has someone on placement with them. On a weekly basis, I have meetings with pupils to gain insight into what type of placements/opportunities they would like and benefit them. How did you end up in this role? I worked as a dance teacher for a lot of years, before moving into support for learning positions within schools and colleges. After moving to Orkney, I continued working as a Support for Learning Auxiliary at Sanday Junior High School before applying for this role with DYW Orkney. What is the best thing about your job? When young people have fantastic experiences at work placements that I have organised. What is the worst thing about your job? When students are disappointed in the options for their work placements, or when exciting opportunities fall through. What skills do you need to undertake your role?
What qualifications do you have? BA (Hons.) Dance P.G.C.E. Post-Compulsory Education Various professional dance teaching qualifications Would you recommend this job to young people, if so why? Yes, this job is extremely varied and having the opportunity to make a difference to young people within Orkney whilst helping them to pursue their goals.
