Sector Spotlight - Inga Cooper, Beauty Therapist

24/7/2019

As we continue our Sector Spotlight on the Health and Beauty industry in Orkney, we have spoken to Inga Cooper who owns Image, and is a Beauty Therapist and Body Piercer.

Inga’s interest in beauty therapy started with painting nails at two years old, she then trained as a Beauty Therapist and set up her own business from home before working on cruise ships.  She then got the chance to take over an existing business in Orkney, which she now runs.

Can you describe a typical day as a Beauty Therapist?

I get to socialise with many different people doing a very satisfying job that I feel passionate about.  I love being creative and bringing my clients’ ideas to life - no matter how quirky or unique - with nails, eyebrow tattooing or maybe a spontaneous piercing.  I even get to take my dog to work (bonus!)

How did you end up in your current role?

I started painting nails from the age of two, it’s something that has been with me forever.

After leaving school at 16, I studied Beauty Therapy at Thurso College for two years.  Once I graduated I started my own little mobile beauty therapy business from home through the Princes Trust. I then worked on board cruise ships for three years.  This is when I caught the ‘travel bug’, I had my Australian visa ready to go when I got the chance to take over Salon7 (Now Image). Three and a half years later, it’s the best move I made.

What is the best thing about your job?

Without being soppy, the clients and staff!  They make it a total pleasure to work with. It’s also very important to have a laugh at work, which we do a lot!

What is the worst thing about your job?

Endless amounts of paperwork!

What skills do you need to undertake your role?

Leadership skills, time keeping, cash handling, working as a team, communication, eye for detail and customer service.

What qualifications do you have?

First Aid, Body Piercing, Wig Fitting stylist, Dermal Filler Skinjector, Cosmetic Tattooing and Padi Diving Open Water.

Would you recommend this job to young people?

YES!!!! Because it’s a very rewarding job.
