Now we hear from Callum Knowles, an HR Officer with Serco Northlink Ferries. Callum left school at the start of his sixth year and undertook a Modern Apprenticeship in Business and Administration. He was working in a HR role within the haulage sector before being made redundant due to COVID. He undertook a different role with the same company, but missed working in HR so applied for his current role with Northlink Ferries. Can you describe a typical day in your job? A typical day in my role involves organising training which is needed for the ships to sail daily. I also deal with the apprentice and cadet rostering as well as any other general HR administration. How did you end up in this role? I left school at the start of sixth year to join a Business Administration Modern Apprenticeship to make me leave my comfort zone. I was then working in the haulage sector as a HR Co-ordinator before being made redundant due to COVID. This then led to me taking a job as a Business Shared Services Administrator which was with the same company. After a short while I missed working in HR, so I then started applying for jobs which led me to the role within NorthLink. What is the best thing about your job? Sense of accomplishment by meeting targets set. There is a lot of exposure to a variety of things which are transferable across all business sectors. What is the worst thing about your job? Sometimes you may be tested to try and find a creative solution to a problem. What skills do you need to undertake your role? Communication, accuracy, people skills, patience, adaptability and problem solving What qualifications do you have?
