Next in our Social Media Takeover, we hear from Mhairi Hughes from Orkney Housing Association Ltd (OHAL) who tells us about her role with the organisation. Mhairi joined OHAL 24 years ago, moving from another local firm where she worked in accounts. She originally joined as Office Manager, but over the years the job has evolved, and she is now the Head of Corporate Governance. Can you describe a typical day in your job? Discussing/dealing with and preparing reports on Governance, HR, IT and management matters. How did you end up in this role? After six years working in accounts with a local firm, I joined OHAL as Office Manager (sounded interesting but didn’t think I stood a chance!). Twenty-four years later, the job has evolved greatly, I still enjoy it and take pride in doing the best I can for the Association, its people and the Orkney Community. What is the best thing about your job? Making a difference to people and our community. What is the worst thing about your job? Keeping up-to-date with ever changing legislation. What skills do you need to undertake your role? Ability to work and communicate with others on a personal and professional level, attention to detail and time management. What qualifications do you have? CIPFA Certificate in Corporate Governance and HND in Administration & Information Management. Would you recommend this job to young people, if so why? Yes, though sometimes challenging, it is rewarding.
